Patricia Ann Martin, At a Glance

Patricia Ann Martin is the owner and operator of Rolla Pub, which resides in a 90-year-old building and serves all types of beer and alcohol for people to socialize.

Ms. Martin's family has owned and operated the Rolla Pub for 50 years, and she became a partner and has worked there since 1985. She found that western Canadian history is not as celebrated as it could be, and she is not expanding as much as she wanted to.

Ms. Martin was a widow with little extra cash, but bought antiques and borrowed local photos to create a space that reflects the northern Canadian culture. It includes local art, fossils, antiques, memorabilia and local history books, all in a warm and friendly environment.

Ms. Martin is proud of her area; Rolla is a small historic farming community in the Peace River district of northeastern British Columbia, Canada. It was first founded around 1912 as a way stop and steamer landing on the Peace River. Farms were established as the prairie was open, and the soil was rich.

Also, a successful oil well was drilled in 1922, establishing petroleum as an industry in the area. The late arrival of the Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway to the Peace District in 1930 hindered development. Rolla itself is roughly 20 kilometers (12 mi) north of Dawson Creek, and is famed for the cozy, community-oriented Rolla Pub.
